Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is really essential to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a forklift battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station should not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Never permit objects like matches or lighters to be used when somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
