Getting Aboard the Lift truck
Amongst the keys to keeping operators safe is the 3-point dismount. Even if this is usually overlooked, it is a key problem in maintaining operator safety. Like for instance, several years ago, at a forklift rally, a contestant carried out the course perfectly at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his equipment and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. The judges ended up docking marks from his overall score and he failed to win the competition.
The importance of dismounting and mounting lift trucks is a very serious factor to be included in training. Additionally, having drivers wear their seatbelts can really save their lives in the event of a tip-over. It is necessary to know that if a loaded forklift's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can occur. Skilled drivers rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is extremely vital that they are ready for that risk in case it happens.
Dismount/Mount
The importance of correctly dismounting and mounting any type of lift truck, including even a low platform pallet jack is essential to ensuring the operator stays safe. Far too many injuries occur when complacency happens around these machines. Several of the serious situations comprise: Operator's catching their loose clothing or coveralls when dismounting and could end up falling and breaking their back. At times, the driver can break or sprain an ankle when they step off of a forklift. The driver can break an arm accidentally when falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The operator could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris when they are still hanging onto the handhold using one hand.
So as to keep you safe, having 3 points of contact is necessary. Obtaining 3 points can be done with 2 hands and 1 foot or by 1 hand and 2 feet. This stance is exactly like climbing down or up a ladder. Remember to always face the machine. Operators usually have a tendency to hop or jump off the machine or to face away from the machinery and these mistakes greatly lessen the overall possibility being injured.
